VLR Winter Maintenance

truck plowing snow

Winter has one of the most profound effects on transportation and mobility.  Weather patterns have changed and have brought with it more challenges to municipal and state agencies.  While winter has been around for eons, the way agencies manage it has significantly changed.  Equipment has changed, chemical use has increased, methods have been improved and refined plus many other improvements. The downside to all this is the environmental impact it has on the waterways, i.e. streams, lakes wells and groundwater supplies.  What can be done to balance winter operations’ impact on the environment plus keep the roads safe?

This class will cover the newest techniques for minimizing the impact of winter operations for both paved and unpaved roads:

  • Why timing is everything
  • How does salt work
  • Spreading Techniques
  • Best use of Chemicals
  • Plowing Techniques
  • Sand Salt Storage
  • Equipment Modifications and use
  • Weather- and weather-related issues
  • Many more.
